These monthly features really do highlight how fast the months go by and I can’t believe it’s time for the May edit already. But without further delay, here’s the florals and feathers I’ve been admiring during the month of May.

florals

Flowered alphabet embroidery kit / French Needle
I’ve been so busy with my crochet cushion that I’ve been neglecting other crafts but this floral sampler kit would definitely get me to pick up an embroidery needle. It’ll look great finished and framed too.

Gardinea top / Joules
Simple style mixed with delicate flowers, perfect with pale denim shorts on a hot summer day!

feathers

Watercolour feather print / Grow Creative
Its the second month in a row that watercolour feathers have featured, it must be love.

Washi tape feather / DIY inspiration / Pinterest
A super easy feather DIY which would look great made into a garland, as if anyone needed an excuse to buy more washi tape!

This last week has been a whirl wind of crazy going on.  Getting Maben settled into Kindergarten was a little more difficult that I thought.  Colton missing his brother until he started school today.  I won So You Think Youre Crafty, which still has me reeling with excitement.  And now, I have come down with a cold.  Booo!  I cannot wait until all these new routines become normal for the kids and myself.  Yup, routine shot right now, even this isnt getting put up on the right day!

August 28 - Colton showing off the last car that he earned for being a big boy and potty training.

August 29 - Colton showing off his grand prize for potty training; a new Cars blanket.  YAY FOR NO MORE DIAPERS!!!

August 30 - My husband bought me some roses for our anniversary.  This one just looked different than all the others while opening.  I thought it was rather beautiful.

August 31 - This giant swallowtail has been my unicorn all summer long.  They have been floating and fluttering through my backyard and I have been dying to get a photo of one, but he was very elusive.  While I was at the nursery, one danced around this flowering shrub long enough for me to capture him.

September 1 - Here is how Animal likes to sleep.  It doesnt look comfortable, but it always makes me laugh.  Im convinced he is half cat.

September 2 - The plants that I picked up from the nursery.  This will be my fall garden.  Yay for two growing seasons in Texas!

September 3 - I busted out my Cricut for what turned into a crafting fail.  Ehhh, it happens to us all doesnt it?

September 4 - Colton on his first day of preschool.  He had an amazing day.  Upon arrival he greeted me by almost tackling me with a hug.  Once we got to the car he said, "My name is Colton with two oooooo Os! I played blocks, cars, dinner, played on the playground and painted. It was a monster, I colored a monster too! GRRRRRR!"  I love my little monster.  Hmmm, I wonder if they were self portraits?

bed furniture plans - Build Your Own Platform Bed

bed furniture plans

Do you want to try your hand at building a platform bed? For those of you who don’t yet know what a platform bed is, it’s an exciting, old way of sleeping that incorporates a simple, elegant frame and a single mattress. Its lines have been used in Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Platform beds can be made of wood or metal. If youre looking to build a platform bed, you’re probably thinking about wood.

Platform beds can be extremely simple. The extremely simple platform beds have no headboard or footboard, and certainly no canopy. They incorporate slats, which, in effect, replace the need for a box spring, since, because they are sturdy yet somehow slightly flexible, support the single mattress on top. The result is that you get a good night’s sleep, are very comfortable, and yet don’t end up with back pains or numb muscles in the morning.

It’s ever better for your back than sleeping on the floor. And now, with the rapid proliferation of memory foam, your platform bed can be even more comfortable and healthy. Memory foam is a gel-like polymer that accepts your shapes and bones, but supports it fully. (It was first used in hospitals, and is now a popular mattress and pillow material.)

Platform bed plans can be more complex too; you can add headboards, footboards, canopies, even extra flourishes and storage units. You can build the storage units as one with the bed frame, or you can create rolling drawers supported by castors, so that the drawers are modifiable and easily maneuverable throughout your bedroom.

It’s not the most difficult job in the world for a handyperson. If you want to build a platform bed, you can order platform bed plans from any of a number of plans retailers. Woodworking clubs, furniture enthusiast groups, and other organizations can give or sell you plans. You can also buy plans online.

Ive been a serious slacker lately.  Since the end of the crafting competition I have been lazy.  Ill admit it.  I am trying to take small steps to get the creative juices flowing.  The great thing about creativity, the more you do, the more ideas you have and the more you want to create.  Im starting small.  Lets hope the snowball effect takes hold soon...Christmas will sneak up faster than I will be prepared for.

September 18 -Maben had caught a stomach bug the night before.  Felt completely fine all day, but still needed to be kept home due to school rules, so I taught him how to shoot his bolt action nerf gun in the prone position at empty water bottles.  It was a blast!

September 19 - I interrupted this tree lizard sun bathing when I came home from getting Maben from school.

September 20 - I do not take notes well.  I am a very visual person, so when I need to remember things, especially things on a slide, I take a picture.

September 21 - Maben is loving his new robot hoodie.

September 22 -  I was taking photos of some sea shells.  They were involved in my crafting fail that I posted about.

September 23 - Since its really still summer in Texas, the boys decided to play in the sprinkler.

September 24 -  Not sure if this is a moth or a butterfly, but I found him hanging out on my cucumber plant this morning.

September 25 - Look at the cool tool I won from Sears Hardware at my Woodworkers Guild club meeting!!!

September 26 - Maben working hard on his birthday card for daddy.

September 27 - The culprit of my broken dryer.  That is the starter switch.  Im still waiting on the part to come in the mail so I can fix it.  *grumble grumble*

September 28 - This is my friend Laura.  A bunch of ladies got together for her birthday and this is what our server did to her at dinner.  You can really tell how awesome she is just by this photo and her allowing me to post it on the internet.

September 29 - I bought this pin because I couldnt resist it.  I gave it to my husband because he is a project manager and this rings far too true too often.  He pulled it out to show a friend, so I took a pic of it.  If you want your own, you can order it here.

September 30 - Here are a few ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) I did to help get the creative juices flowing.  I love how they all turned out.  See, starting out small.

October 1 - I let my kids pick what they want for their birthday cake.  Colton wanted sprinkle cake with strawberry/pink frosting and purple, green and black sprinkles on top.  So, that is what he got.

woodworking plans box - Twin jewelry boxes

woodworking plans box

This is a pair of small walnut boxes I made for my wife as a Mothers Day present. They started life as one box but I didnt like the proportions. The math didnt work either - two boys, one box. The joke now is that my wife can use one box for the left earrings, the other box for the right...

The boxes are about 3 1/4 in. square and 2 1/2 in. tall. I cut the miters on the tablesaw using a dedicated miter sled. The boxes have plywood bottoms, glued in. The panels in the tops are (I think) yellowheart. Terrific luster and shimmer, and a great contrast with the walnut.

Everything was assembled at one time during glue up and then I sawed the tops off at the bandsaw. A little light sanding on the underside of the tops and the top rim of the boxes cleaned up the bandsaw cuts nicely. Im pleasantly surprised at how close the line between top and box comes to disappearing. The tops are held in place with a glued-in insert underneath.

Its officially the holiday season.  Thanksgiving was a wonderful time in our house.  The feast came out perfect and we are still enjoying the leftovers.  I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful for you too.  One of the most wonderful things that happened this week, fall came to Texas.  We actually have fall color, and I mean its not just the leaves changing to brown.  There are shades of red and yellow.  So pretty!

November 20 - Another red admiral visited my American flag.  The way he landed and the composition worked out, it looks like a Texas flag...almost.

November 21 - I was prepping all the food I could before hand.  That included a pumpkin cheesecake with a sour cream topping.  Here is the sour cream topping.  Yum!

November 22 - Again, our feast.  Happy Thanksgiving!

November 23 - People watching?  These four Inca doves have been enjoying my bench lately.  They look so cute huddled together.

November 24 - We went to a birthday party at a local restaurant that has some farm animals on site.  Here are my boys with one of the ponies.

November 25 - My proof that fall color has come to South East Texas.

November 26 - My sleeping beauty.  Colton went hard all break and didnt want to nap.  It finally caught up to him.

Welcome December!  Here comes the Christmas crunch of not enough time and too much to do.  I do love this time of year and some of the goodness you can be witness to.  I am excited, the kids are getting excited and I hope that excitement is buzzing in your home as well.

November 27 - This is Jeremy Grubb.  He is an amazing woodworker and came to speak at my woodworking guild about marquetry and showed off the latest project he is working on.  I learned an incredible amount about the topic and hope to try it in the near future.  If you want to see more of Jeremy, I highly recommend that you go check out his website.  www.jeremygrubb.com

November 28 - I photographed steam rising up off of my breakfast eggs.  I have never tried to photograph steam before.

November 29 - Maben owning those monkey bars.  He can do the full run, 37 monkey bars!

November 30 - I have been working like crazy on some Christmas presents.  Here is a batch of Christmas light stained glass ornaments.

December 1 - Breakfast with Santa.  Its Christmas time in Texas, as you can see by my kids donning shorts.  Santa must have been dying in that suit.  Poor guy.

December 2 - My bib from the Graffiti run.  What a blast that was.  Pictures to come.

December 3 - I spotted these leaves laying just as they are on the sidewalk.  I found it absolutely beautiful to see a heart shaped leaf laying so perfectly in the center of such a beautiful yellow colored leaf.  Nature is so incredibly beautiful if you just stop to admire it.

easy wood projects - Build Me Up

| 0 komentar |
easy wood projects

easy wood projects

Being skilled in many different mediums sometimes leaves me feeling fractured at times.  Its hard to know what to do and what to further pursue.  I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I can combine many of my talents and passions.

Woodworking and watercolor painting are my two biggest creative passions.  I did this as an homage to them.  I am currently working on expanding and playing more with the pyrography (wood burning) and painting on wood with wood dyes.  I also need to build a frame for my blue jay feather.  I plan on dying the frame as well.

Once I have honed this skill a bit, I will give some insight on the process.  Since I am still learning and playing with it, I need to figure out what works and what doesnt.  I am currently in the process of doing a butterfly.  I need to get rid of this cold before I can continue on it since I need to sand it down and I dont want to do that when I can barely breathe.
