I have entered one of my newest pyrography/wood dyed pieces into an art contest being held by my local Jerrys Artarama store.  I was so excited to make the cut and my piece will be on display and this weekend I will find out if I place!!!

This is a red-bellied woodpecker on the side of a tree trunk.  Its quite large, 16x20 inches.  Below is a close up view of the feathers so you can see just how much detail I put into it.

I am so proud of my munchkin.  Maben won the Pinewood Derby and was awarded the 1st place trophy for the Tiger Den.

I am proud, not because he won first place, but because of how he treated his fellow scouts and the amount of work he put into his car.

Maben told everyone, "Great job," after each race.  He complemented a few of his fellow scouts on how cool their car was.  I am proud of all the scouts in our den on how well they handled the entire experience.  They all had a great time and kept amazing positive attitudes.

Some of the races were closer than others and at the end of the day, Maben held the top time for the entire pack.  Looks like garage day next year might be at our house so we can help out other kids.  Actually the night of check-in (the day before the race) I spent over an hour grinding weight out of a kids car who was overweight.  The weights were glued inside the car and thankfully I brought my Dremel kit (affiliate link) with grinding tips to help out.  I am so grateful that I could help ensure that all the kids that showed up could race.  I got lots of hugs and high fives in return for helping the kids out.

If you are looking into making a fast car, we had bought this book (affiliate link) with some tips and tricks.  Keep in mind that there are rules and regulations in place, so please get the list of rules from your pack before implementing any of the secrets listed in the book.  There were a few that were against the rules.

The one thing that I learned, the gym in which he hold our pack meetings is not good for lighting.  Next year for better photos I am going to be bringing a few spot lights and my better flash.  The first photo was taken outside my house, but all the others were in the gym.

I cant wait for next year.  Its such a fun event and I had a blast building my car.  I need to think of something fun and creative that I can make.  Good thing I have lots of time to think about it.

All gross things must come to an end--even the Saw franchise, which reaches its terminal point with this seventh feature (its first released in 3D in theaters). "Franchise" actually isnt the proper term for the grisly series; each new film might be best described as the latest model, like a car or a DVD player, since the mechanics of the infernal machines created and unleashed by the morally driven Jigsaw and his henchman, Matt Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), are the real selling points, not the plot or acting or direction...
Adam (Leigh Whannell) wakes up in a dank room across from Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) and the body of a guy who has blown his own brains out. Not a happy place, obviously, and it gets worse when both men realize that theyve been chained and pitted against one another by an unseen but apparently omniscient maniac whos screwing with their psyches as payment for past sins...

Jigsaw has killed your partner and destroyed your life. Now he has trapped you in an abandoned insane asylum that he alone controls. If you can defeat his brutal traps and survive, you may just discover the truth behind what drives this twisted serial killer...
The Saw series gains a commendable hint of social conscience with this sixth entry in the gleefully gruesome franchise. Thats not to say that the creators have abandoned the films main focus--dealing out hideous punishments for wrongdoers, courtesy its antihero, John Kramer/Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), who remains very dead as of this film--but screenwriters Marcus Dunston and Patrick Melton (who have penned every Saw pic since IV) deserve a note of recognition for pointing Jigsaws moral fury at the insurance industry, which is personified by key victim Peter Outerbridges oily exec...

easy wood projects - DVD Video Storage Cabinet

0 komentar
easy wood projects

easy wood projects

The plans for this DVD video storage cabinet actually started out a little more interesting than the result you see here. My mother-in-law had asked me to design a shelf to store DVD?s, CD?s, and VHS tapes.

I came up with a clever shelf that was adjustable to fit various combinations of CDs and DVDs perfectly. It turns out all she really wanted was a set of simple DVD storage shelves. So I headed back to the drawing board and turned out these plans for a pretty basic DVD storage cabinet.

At first, I considered making the shelves fixed rather than adjustable. A DVD case is about 7-1/2? tall by 5-3/8? deep so the 8-1/2? tall clearance would have been fine. However, by making the shelves adjustable it will be useful for storing other things as future needs change.

Material I?m quite sure that you?re all getting pretty sick and tired of me building things out of 3/4? white melamine. But this time in particular, that?s what she asked for! My in-laws just had some new cabinets installed as part of a dining room addition and everything is white. So in this case, white melamine really did fit in okay.

I should take a moment to mention that there are significant differences in the quality of various brands and grades of melamine panels. This is probably why it often gets such a bad rap. I picked up some melamine at the local ?home improvement warehouse? and it turned out to be complete garbage. The core was a very poor grade of particle board, making it completely unsuitable for building cabinets.

For the DVD video storage cabinet I bought a reputable brand of melamine from a lumber yard that often deals in factory seconds. The core was a dense, good quality particle board, but the face had several blemishes in it that really caused problems when I laid out the sheet for cutting. Also, the price was very little different than what I would have paid for a high quality panel at a commercial lumber supplier. The bottom line is that it pays to shop carefully when choosing your materials.

Construction The DVD storage cabinet is really just an open wall cabinet with a couple of minor adjustments. First, since I wanted a specific clear distance between the shelves, I placed the shelf support holes at intervals other than the standard 32mm. Keeping 8-1/2? between shelves allows enough room for a DVD (or VHS tape?they?re the same height) plus a bit of room to reach in and pull the disc or tape off the shelf.

As I was designing the original DVD video storage plans, I needed to center the adjustable shelves on the support holes. Normally the shelf sits slightly above the hole, depending on the shelf pin or support used. To achieve the look and spacing I wanted, I opted for an angled steel shelf support. They?re available for use in both 5mm and 1/4" holes and they allow the shelf to sit approximately centered on the hole.
Wall Mounting One of the things that makes this DVD video storage cabinet unique is the method used for mounting it to the wall. Rather than screw the cabinet directly to the wall, it is hung on a pair of beveled rails called a French cleat. One cleat is attached to the cabinet and the other is attached to the wall. The cabinet is then hooked onto the wall cleat. A screw can then be used through the bottom nailer to prevent the cabinet from being lifted up off the cleat.

Hanging wall cabinets using a French cleat is actually pretty common. In fact, there are several commercially produced metal variations on the wooden French cleat that I?ve employed here. A couple significant advantages of using a French cleat are increased strength and a better ability to hang your cabinets level and plumb.

Strength is improved, especially in a long run of cabinets, because the wall cleat runs the full length of all the cabinets and is screwed to every stud. Sometimes with long runs of narrow cabinets you?re only able to fasten a cabinet to one stud. By using a French cleat, the weight of the cabinets is evenly distributed between all the studs.

Leveling your cabinets is also easier with a French cleat. You only need to level and plumb a 4? wide board. This is so much easier to handle than four or five cabinets ganged together. It?s also possible to shim the wall cleat away from the wall if the wall isn?t perfectly straight.

In my particular case I was most interested in the French cleat because it allowed me a very simple, concealed method of fastening the DVD video storage cabinet to the wall. Since both cleats are completely enclosed between the cabinet back and the wall, you can hang it without any exposed fasteners. This cabinet is so small that I wouldn?t even add the screw through the bottom nailer.

Drawing File I suppose this has digressed from how to build a DVD storage shelf into a discussion on avoiding poor quality sheet goods and a mini primer on the use of French cleats for hanging cabinets. woodworking table

I cannot overemphasize the need for strictly following all table saw safety rules when working in the shop. Most of the projects on this site require cutting parts on a table saw. Developing safe table saw operating habits will ensure that you can finish and enjoy your projects free from injury.

Of paramount importance when working with any power tool is to wear eye and hearing protection. Also, be sure to read all of the manuals and safety instructions that come with your tools.

Beyond that, this short video on table saw use and safety is a great primer for novice woodworkers. Its also an excellent reminder for seasoned woodworkers who may need to brush up on their shop safety awareness.

woodworking table - Brad’s Router Table

0 komentar
woodworking table

woodworking table

From: Brad Lockwood

Location: Stratford, CT

Hobbyist or Pro: Hobbyist

Project Name: Router Table

Wood Species: Birch Ply/Maple/Polar

Finish Used: Standard Stain with General Finish Dye stain, 3 coats of General Finish Wipe On Stain. I also used Shellac on the top.

Project Description:
This was my second project and I needed a good Router table. I wanted to see the effects of different finishes on different woods and what happens if I don’t do the light sanding after the water base stain. I also wanted to practice dovetail, rabbet joinery, inlay (t-tracks for the miter and fence). I also ordered and installed the Jessem Router Lift, which I bought after watching Marc’s router lift segment. Marc was right on with his analysis in my opinion.

As you can see from the full front photo, I fully integrated the dust collection using hose connected to the fence and a pickup from the router cavity. I placed plexi-glass on the door to the cavity and placed a light in there as well that turns on when the router is on. The very bottom door area is for storage. The left side drawers are sideless as I drilled holes to hold the bits. The Top right side drawer is a false front to hold the switch and the 3 lower drawers are half blind dovetails using the MLCS jig.

I learned a lot about finishing, dovetailing, drawer guide mounting and many other techniques as well. Now I have a top-of-the-line table and lessons learned. So as my friends say, this is the most furniture like router table east of the Mississippi.

easy wood projects - DIY upcycle an old t shirt into wall art

0 komentar
easy wood projects

easy wood projects

This easy DIY can be done in just 20 minutes and is a great way to recycle your (or as in this case, your boyfriend’s) favourite logo shirts, turning them into framed wall art.

You will need:
An old t-shirt (ironed)
Picture frame and mount (or card)
Scissors
Sellotape
Pencil

Lay your t-shirt out flat and place your mount on top of the logo. If your frame didnt come with a mount just cut a piece of card to fit the frame, the hole in the middle isnt necessary. Draw lines a couple of centimetres away from the edge of the mount at each corner.

Cut out the logo following the lines you marked out, it doesnt need to be too neat.

Turn the logo over so your mount or card is on the back of the logo. Start to sellotape the t-shirt to the card by folding over the edges. Keep pulling the material tight so you dont get any wrinkles. Be sure to check the front regularly to make sure the logo is in the right place and not distorted.

Then just pop into your frame, step back and admire your super DIY skills (see what I did there?).

The boyfriend immediately hung it on his office wall, so its a definite hit. You dont have to stick with comic style t-shirts, band t-shirts, or any with brilliant quotes on them would look great too!

easy wood projects - The Gift of Glass

0 komentar
easy wood projects

easy wood projects

Each year, I like to make gifts for teachers, close friends and family.  This year I mass produced stained glass Christmas lightbulb ornaments that were given to teachers and my close friends.

I think they turned out great.  I used one of my Cricut Christmas cartridges to make the template.  I made 10 and gave away all but one.

I had to keep one to put on my tree.  I kept one of the aqua colored one and it looked amazing.  I love how textured glass catches the light.  On the left, no light bouncing off the front, on the right, how it looks when the light catches it.

I also tried making a paperweight for my mother-in-law.  For my first attempt, I was very proud of it.

The seashells and sand came from the beach that is a favorite of us both: Ridgevale Beach, Chatham, MA.  I used four different kinds of glass.  Clear with ripple, white and milk swirl, aqua with ripple and dark blue.  I cut enough glass to finish one for myself and plan on doing that soon.

easy wood projects - Using A Wood Router

easy wood projects

easy wood projects

Using a wood router to shape an edge, plow a dado, or perform some other cutting task is an important requirement of many woodworking projects that youll come across. Even a project as simple as the toy blocks can be greatly enhanced by employing a wood router to soften the edges with a roundover bit.
If youre completely new to woodworking, or even just new to wood routers, this series of videos should prove to be very useful to you. Woodworking routers are dangerous tools, and operating them with good results can be a mysterious endeavor.
Although there are numerous online videos that demonstrate great tips on using wood routers, most of them are targeted more towards people who already have a basic knowledge of router operation.
This series of videos takes a slightly different approach. The videos teach the very basics of operating a router, including a strong emphasis on safety. Theyre produced by an industrial arts instructor so its just like being in shop class!

bird feeder plans - How to make a bird house

You Might Want To Try:  How To Build Bird Feeders

•Look for clean, over-sized pallets used for shipping large products such as furniture or machinery. Pull off the slats using a hammer and pry bar, taking care not to break the boards at the nailing points.

•Step 2
Remove all of the nails, staples or other fasteners to avoid damaging cutting blades and to reduce the risk of injury. If you want, use a metal detector to find nails or metal pieces embedded in the wood.

•Step 3
Scrub the pallet wood with a stiff wire brush to remove the dirt and grit. Saw blades dull quickly when cutting through wood covered in sand, grease and grime. Inspect the wood closely, cutting away any split or damaged sections.

•Step 4
Cut the prepared pallet wood into the rough dimensions needed to build the birdhouse. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the dimensions of a birdhouse for cavity-nesting birds such as chickadees, nuthatches, wrens and warblers is 5-1/2 inches wide, 4 inches deep and 8 inches high, with an entrance hole of 1-1/8 to 1-1/4 inches in diameter.

•Step 5
Lay out and the drill the entrance hole in the front piece. Measure up 6 inches from the bottom edge, centering the entrance hole across the width of the front section. Drill several holes, one-quarter inch in diameter, in the bottom piece for drainage.

•Step 6
Cut the sides on a slight angle, creating a sloped roof to shed the rain. To mark the angles, measure 7-3/4 inches from one end and make a mark along the edge of the board. Measure 9-1/4 inches up the other side of the board and make another mark. Connect the marks by drawing a straight line between the marks. Cut along the line.

•Step 7
Attach the front piece to one of the side pieces using weather-resistant nails, lining up the bottom edges of both pieces. The side piece is one-quarter inch shorter than the front piece. When fully assembled, the shorter sides create a small gap under the roof to provide for air circulation and ventilation for the nest box. Attach the bottom to the side and front pieces, and then attach the roof and back sections. The back section extends below the nest box, making it easier to mount the finished birdhouse to a pole or tree.

•Step 8
Position the second side piece in place. To make a hinged door for cleaning the birdhouse, secure the side section by driving one nail through the front piece and into the edge of the side section, approximately 1 inch down from the top. Drive a second nail through the back section and into the other edge of the side piece, directly across from the first nail to create a pivot point. Secure the door with a small screw, centered along the bottom edge. If desired, paint or stain the finished birdhouse before hanging it in the garden.

Do not paint the birdhouse. If your really wanted to paint it, use the lead and toxic free paint.

I want to extend a "Thank You" to all the Veterans out there.  Those no longer serving, still serving or paid the ultimate price, you live in my heart.  I cant even begin to put down into the proper words what it means to be a part of Military life.  With my time as an Army wife, I do know one thing for certain; I will always have the utmost respect for the men and women who choose to wear a uniform.  Thank You from the bottom of my heart.

My husband sitting on his tank, OIF 2003.
If you would like to read the absolute most beautiful piece I have seen written about Veterans day, please grab a box of tissues and check this out, "Veterans Day 2013 - Let Us Not Forget."

Also, I wanted to let you know something that you can do to express your gratitude to our servicemen and women.  You can send them a card this holiday season.  The Red Cross is once again organizing the event, "Holiday Mail for Heroes."  I urge you to go to the link and check out the details.  If you have any non-family photo Holiday cards, gather them up and send them to our troops.

easy wood projects - Oops!

easy wood projects

I swear, there is a plague that has descended upon my house and never intends to leave.  There is only so much whining, fevers, crying, and bodily fluids that one woman can handle.  With all that, I reached a breaking point.  I try and channel my frustrations to good.  I REALLY try and not take them out on anyone else.  I am afraid I took it out on my shovel.

Yup, thats a bend in my shovel.  Poor red, she deserved better.  I used her to unearth a tree stump.  Probably not the most proper tool for the job, but it served its purpose.  I only took out my frustrations on her and that stump that never wanted to die.

That tree stump, the stump of a crepe myrtle that stood over 15 feet tall.  It became sickly and barely produced a flower, so I cut it down, it then went crazy and tried to come back to life.  I had other plans.  I will show off what replaced it soon, but for now, I am mourning the fact that I have a decrepit shovel.

easy wood projects - The Essential Guide To Aromatheray

0 komentar
easy wood projects

easy wood projects

?So What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the art of applying essential oils to suit individual needs. The oils work directly on the chemistry of the body via the skin. Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile liquid plant materials, more commonly known as essential oils. Essential oils are extracts that contain the substances that give plants and trees their smell. The oils are produced by small glands in the petals, leaves, stems and bark of many plants and trees. In nature, the scents are released slowly, but when heated or crushed, the oil glands burst and release the plants aroma much more powerfully.

It isnt exactly known when or where the art of aromatherapy began. It is believed that the Chinese knowledge of medicinal oils may have reached the west from the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. A French chemist called René-Maurice Gattefossé coined the term aromatherapy to describe the process of using plant oils therapeutically. The story goes that, while working in a perfume factory in the early 20th century, he burnt his hand and instinctively grabbed some lavender oil and poured it onto the burn. He was so impressed by how quickly and cleanly the burn healed, he began studying the healing powers of plant oils.

The first recorded use of plants in England was in the 13th century and from then on essential oils have become widely used as perfumes, antiseptics and medicines.

So how does Aromatherapy work?

Aromatherapy usually works by massage. Massages are usually given as a relaxing treatment covering the stress areas such as the back, shoulders and legs. Aromatherapy oils can also be inhaled, either by using an oil burner or by using them in the bath. Aromatherapy is believed to be suitable for people of all ages. It is claimed that aromatherapy can treat many conditions such as nervous disorders, depression, anger and stress.

What are some of the plants used in Aromatherapy and what are their benefits?

Eucalyptus oil is often used in combination with Mint to provide relief for the airways when suffering from a cold or flu.

Black pepper has a sharp and spicy aroma. It is Commonly used for muscular aches and pains and for stimulating the circulation . It is also useful for bruises, since it stimulates the circulation. Combining Aromatheray with a sensual masage or sex toys is both safe and recommended.

Lavender oil is used as an antiseptic, to soothe minor cuts and burns, to calm and relax, and to soothe headaches and migraines.

Yarrow oil is known to reduce joint inflammation and to relieve cold and flu symptoms.

Jasmine, Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang-ylang oil are used as aphrodisiacs.

Lemon oil is used to relieve stress due to its uplifting properties.

So, does aromatherapy work?

Despite a lack of good research proving that essential oils could work by either stimulating your sense of smell or being absorbed through your skin, in theory it is possible to predict the effects of the oils based on their chemical make up. However, there is no conclusive scientific evidence that the theories are true, or false, and there has been little research to try and prove them right or wrong.

No kitchen installation is complete without countertops. So here I give you plastic laminate countertop plans. Plastic laminate is a durable, inexpensive counter surface that comes in hundreds of different colors.
Probably the most commonly known brand is Formica. In fact, plastic laminate is often referred to generically as Formica. However, there are numerous other plastic laminate manufacturers out there. They include Pionite, LaminArt, Abet Laminati, Nevamar, Wilsonart, and others.
Laminate Grades Laminate comes in three basic thicknesses: standard grade, post-form grade, and vertical grade. Until recently, standard grade laminate was used for countertops because it is the thickest of the three grades and wears better under heavy use. However, most manufacturers have moved toward only stocking post-form grade.
Post-form grade is slightly thinner than standard grade, and was originally intended for a technique called postforming. This is where the laminate is heated as it is applied to the substrate to form integral splashes, coves, and bullnose and no-drip edges.
Vertical grade laminate is the thinnest and is only suitable for low-wear vertical surfaces such as cabinet doors and finished cabinet ends.
Substrate Material The substrate is the foundation for a quality laminated countertop. Industrial grade particle board or even MDF can be used for dry areas such as offices and many garage cabinet installations.
Wet areas (any place that has a sink in it) such as kitchen and bathroom counters should be made with a plywood substrate. The plywood itself doesnt need to be waterproof, but it DOES need to have a surface that is clean, smooth, flat, and free from voids.
Gluing Plastic Laminate Plastic laminate is attached to the plywood or particle board substrate using contact cement. The cement is brushed, sprayed, or rolled (make sure to read the instructions for the particular contact cement you are using) onto both the laminate AND the substrate and allowed to dry.
After the contact cement has dried, the two pieces are carefully aligned and pressed together. The laminate countertop is then rolled firmly to produce a strong bond between the two different materials.
Sizing The Laminate The laminate should be cut about 1/2" larger than the substrate, then trimmed to fit after gluing it to the substrate. This is best accomplished with a flush trim router bit.
When trimming laminate to a wood surface, such as the top and bottom of the self-edge, I like to trim it first with a router. Then gently belt sand the edge of the plastic and the surface of the substrate at the same time. This makes a nice smooth surface for attaching the top laminate.
Belt sanders are pretty aggressive, so you need to be careful to sand lightly to prevent creating dips in the laminate countertop. Also, only sand with the belt direction moving towards the center of the top. Otherwise the sander can actually pull off the laminate self-edge.
Filing The Laminate After the final trim of the top laminate, the edge will have small chatter marks from the router and a sharp edge. Many people simply file out the chatter marks and file the sharp edge smooth. I prefer to make a second pass over the edge with a bearing-guided bevel bit in the router. After this extra step, I only have to lightly file the chatter marks and the sharp edge.
There are even "no-file" router bits for this purpose, but I have never personally tried one. The point is to make a heavy trim pass to size the laminate, then make a lighter finish pass to "soften" the edge. It may take a little bit more effort to set up the router a second time, but the result is a professional looking laminate countertop edge.
Using the bevel bit also requires much less filing. The hard work is done by the router, with only minor hand work with the file. Incidentally, sandpaper should never be used to finish the edge of laminate. Sandpaper actually scratches the laminate, whereas a file will scrape or cut the laminate smooth.
Assembling The Sub-Top There are many ways to assemble the substrate for a laminate countertop. At the most basic, a single piece of plywood or particle board can be laminated as-is. Traditionally, countertops are between 1 and 2 inches thick. Plywood or particle board that thick is generally pretty expensive and VERY heavy.
A single thickness of 3/4" or 1/2" could be used. However, most material this thickness will tend to warp over time. Besides, thin countertops arent very visually appealing.
A second method that is commonly used for countertops that are laminated in place, is to nail or screw two layers of plywood or particle board (or a combination of the two) directly to the cabinets. I dont particularly care for this method because it makes a mess wherever you install the laminate countertop. It also makes it more difficult to later replace the counters if needed.
My preference is to build the laminate countertop in the shop using 3/4" substrate with a 1/2" or 3/4" built-up self-edge. The build-up can simply be 2" to 4" wide strips glued and nailed to the bottom of the substrate.
Several years ago, one of the guys I worked with showed me a great variation on this method. This is the technique I have used in these plans. It adds the extra step of gluing and nailing a trim strip wherever plastic laminate self-edge will be applied. The trim strip is the same width as the thickness of the countertop, and extends past the counter substrate 1/4" wherever the counter hits the wall.
Why The Extra Work? First, gluing laminate to the edge of two pieces of plywood or particle board stacked on top of each other can be a bit tricky. The edges dont always line up perfectly, and sanding them can easily put them out of square. This way you always have a nice flat surface to attach your edge laminate.
After gluing the edge laminate and trimming it with the router, you can belt sand the laminate edge and the wood edge together to fit flush with the face of the substrate. Youll then have a perfect surface for attaching your top laminate.
(As a small side note, the edge laminate should always be attached before the top laminate. If done the other way around, the edge laminate will eventually peel off from things being dragged off the edge of the counter. It also looks rather unprofessional because the dark brown core of the laminate is much more visible.)
The second reason for adding the extra wood edge is to simplify installing the countertop. Very often you will find that your walls are not perfectly straight, plumb, or square. This can cause the edges of the laminate countertop to not meet the wall, leaving a visible gap. Scribing (marking and cutting) the counter to fit the wall is the typical solution, but this can be difficult and time consuming.
In this design, only the counter edges that show will actually contact the wall. Everywhere else that the counter meets the wall will have a slight gap. If the walls are perfect, then the gap will be a uniform 1/4". Otherwise it will vary according to the imperfections in the wall.
This technique should save you lots of time and headache when installing the counter, but will only work if you are applying a backsplash that will cover the gap. If you dont plan to use backsplash, then you may need to scribe the counter to fit any irregularities in the wall.
Backsplash For these plans, I didnt provide any details for the backsplash other than an overall size. You can use matching laminate for the backsplash, wood, tile, stone, metal, glass, or nearly anything you want.
You will notice that I stop the splash 1/4" from the edge of the counter. This makes it easier to caulk the joint between the splash and the counter surface, a necessary step if youre installing the top in a wet area such as a kitchen or bathroom.
Drawing File Well, thats quite a lot to say about building a laminate countertop. It may seem complicated, but its definitely within the capabilities of the average woodworker.
I encourage you to dive in and give it a try by clicking on the link to the plans below. If youd like to download a copy to your computer, right click then "save-as". Either way, youll need the Adobe reader to view the file.

easy wood projects - Top tips for amigurumi crochet beginners

easy wood projects

Ive finally started a new crochet project - this cute (and free) giraffe pattern. Ive never tired amigurumi crochet before so the first few rounds were a bit of a learning curve and I had to google/ pin a lot of amigurumi tips and tutorials! And start over twice. Ahem.

So seeing as I spent all that time collecting some good resources and that they seemed to have helped me enormously (three giraffe limbs done!) I thought Id put them together as some top tips for amigurumi crochet beginners.

1. Rather than working in circles as you do for granny squares etc., amigurumi crochet is worked in a spiral so a stitch marker is pretty much essential in order to avoid constantly losing your place. If youre anything like me counting stitches is the least fun part of crochet!

2. Each new stitch, i.e. each dc (UK) in the giraffe pattern is worked through both loops of the stitch underneath it, not just one loop and not into the gap between stitches.

The first few minutes of this video show you how to start off, place your stitch marker and work through both loops. For a step-by-step guide you could even watch the whole thing and make the pig along with her.

3. Decreasing, something I hadn’t come across in my limited granny square experience. It seems there are a couple of ways to decrease in amigurumi, but the invisible way definitely sounds the best so thats the only one Ive learned. Heres a brilliant step-by-step tutorial for decreasing.

4. Changing colour, as rounds are worked in a spiral (see tip 1.) changing colour can result in an odd step halfway round, so this tutorial shows how to get a smoother colour change by starting the new stitch in the old colour and completing it in the new colour.

Apologies if any of them seem blindingly obvious but as someone who has only ever crocheted two granny square cushions and a heart, all I can say is that they werent to me!

Ive not tackled increasing stitches or any finishing or sewing together yet, so let me know if you have any great tips for how to do these, or youd like another post once Ive attempted to master them.

Happy crocheting!
